FAQ'S
How often do my items need to be PAT tested?
There’s no fixed legal frequency for PAT testing in the UK. Instead, the IET Code of Practice recommends testing based on a risk assessment that considers the type of equipment, how and where it’s used, how often it's used, and its maintenance history. For example, office equipment in a low-risk environment may only need testing every few years, while tools on a construction site might require testing every few months. The key is to assess the risks and set a schedule that keeps people safe. Get in touch if you'd like to discuss this with us and we can point you in the right direction.
Is PAT testing a legal requirement in the UK?
No, PAT testing itself is not a legal requirement. However, under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers must ensure electrical equipment is safe to use, which often involves regular inspection and testing. In addition to this, insurance companies often require regular PAT testing as part of their terms and conditions so its always worth checking with them.
Do we carry out repairs during PAT testing?
During PAT testing, we carry out minor repairs, such as replacing faulty plugs, fuses, or damaged cables. Any issues that require more extensive repairs will need to be handled separately by a qualified technician or replaced by an appropriate alternative.
What areas do you cover?
We’re based in Saltburn and cover a wide area including Redcar and Cleveland, Middlesbrough, Stockton, Darlington, and much of North Yorkshire. If you’re unsure whether we cover your location, just get in touch — we’re happy to help.
Do you offer evening or weekend appointments?
Yes! We know that mid-day testing can be disruptive, so we offer flexible appointment times, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends. We’ll work around your schedule to minimise any business downtime.
Do you test microwaves for radiation leakage?
Yes, we offer microwave emissions testing to check for potential radiation leakage. This is especially important for staff kitchens, schools, and commercial catering environments. Please note that our meters are not lab-calibrated but are regularly checked for accuracy.
Is there a call-out fee for small jobs?
For small jobs (typically under 15 items), we have a minimum charge of £45 to cover time, travel, and certification. This includes testing, certification, and some minor repairs like fuse replacements where needed.
Can you test equipment on construction sites?
Absolutely. We regularly test 110V site tools, extension leads, and power distribution units in line with the IET Code of Practice. Construction sites are considered higher-risk, so regular PAT testing is particularly important.
Do I need to shut down my computers or tills during testing?
Not necessarily. We work flexibly to avoid disruption, scheduling testing for quieter times or outside business hours. We’ll always work with you to plan the least disruptive approach.
Do you provide certificates and reports?
Yes, you’ll receive a detailed PAT testing certificate along with a full itemised report for your records. These can be used for insurance, inspections, landlord requirements, or general compliance.
